WASHINGTON – On May 18, Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernández issued the following statement after the passage of H.Con. Res. 40 “Expressing support for local law enforcement officers …”
“May 18, the U.S. House of Representatives passed, and I voted for H. Con. Res. 40 because I support law enforcement today and every day.
However, this resolution cannot be a substitute for real action to support law enforcement and keep our communities safe. Our police officers, sheriffs, and first responders deserve funding and resources.
Just as Republicans thank our veterans for their service, while they cut VA funding, they praise law enforcement in a Resolution but vote against funding they need.
Just a month ago, every Republican voted to pass McCarthy's Default on America Act. That bill would drastically cut funding for local law enforcement in New Mexico and nationwide. It means the federal government no longer provides support for up to 400 local police officer positions. It means a state like New Mexico might receive $1 million less for police, crime prevention, and drug treatment.
I’m also deeply disappointed that the resolution doesn’t acknowledge and praise state and tribal police, or federal law enforcement. As we’ve seen in the tragedies that have impacted New Mexico, when law enforcement works together across jurisdictions they help build a safer community for all New Mexicans.
I supported law enforcement when I voted for funding for local law enforcement in the Invest to Protect Act, the Mental Health Justice Act, the Break the Cycle of Violence Act, and the VICTIM Act.
Actions speak louder than words and I support and stand with all our police officers.”
