From March 7, 2023 post.
After reviewing site conditions this morning, fire crews will not move forward with the Ojo Sarco Piles Prescribed Fire on March 7, the first day identified for potential ignitions. Fire management will continue looking for any potential opportunities in the coming days.
“This is a normal part of the prescribed fire planning process. If the conditions are outside of the prescription, we will postpone until later and look for other opportunities,” said Camino Real District Ranger Michael Lujan. “If weather and site conditions continue to be out of prescription, we will postpone ignitions until next fall or winter.”
The amount of snow on the ground significantly melted over the weekend. While snow on its own is not required for ignitions, fire managers must also consider site conditions combined with weather, and little precipitation is forecasted in the near term.
The community meeting planned for tonight (Mon., Mar. 6) will still occur. It will be from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Ojo Sarco Volunteer Fire Department at 2228 New Mexico Hwy 76, Ojo Sarco, NM 87521.
