UPDATE! In coordination with STIU and Albuquerque Police; technology efforts coordinated by our outstanding Communications Officers (dispatchers) helped us track Joey Mares. MARES was captured in Albuquerque last night. He also picked up new firearms and dope charges there.

On the afternoon of Feburary 20th, 2023 TCSO deputies responded to a call of a shooting on West Romero Rd in Taos County. The victim and witness identified the offender as Joey Mares of the Taos area and deputies believed he had fled the scene in a maroon Nissan.
Within minutes Sheriff Steve Miera located the vehicle in the Miranda Canyon area and initiated a pursuit, he did recognize the driver as Joey Mares, a recent parolee from NM Department of Corrections. The pursuit terminated when MARES went into an arroyo and fled on foot. Other deputies arrived and and innitiated a ground search of the area and utilized a drone to tey to locate him. The search efforts were discontinued after a couple hours.
A search warrant was later executed at the residence where the shooting occurred and certain evidence was collected from the scene. Based on probable cause an arrest warrant has been issed for Joey Mares charging Aggravated Battery with a deadly weapon, Felon in possession of a firearm, and other felony charges. The victim was shot in the leg and the wound is not life-threatening.
Joey Mares is 27 years old and has multiple visible tattoos on his neck, upper body, and both forearms; he should be considered armed and dangerous.
