On December 30th, 2022 at about 11:00 pm TCSO Deputies along with Questa EMS & Fire units responded to a single vehicle crash on HWY38 near mm 5.
On arrival they noted the driver, and only occupant of the GMC Pickup, was deceased from injuries sustained in the crash.
The deceased was identified as 53 year old Bridget Varney, who had recently moved to northern Taos County from Texas. The at-scene investigation shows the vehicle was traveling west bound when it left the roadway and struck a tree.
It appears that speed and possible driver inattention are factors in the fatal crash. There is no indication of impairment, no indication of another vehicle being involved, and the driver was not wearing a seatbelt.
