Forest Road 5 (La Jara Canyon Road) near Angel Fire, NM, is now open—and there is a bonus: Wood stacked for dead and down permit holders! We estimate there are between 100 and 150 cords worth of logs along the road in three spots, all the way to its dead end, about 1.7 miles in. It’s primarily a mix of ponderosa, Engelman spruce, subalpine fir and Douglas fir.
The below video was taken this morning, and the amount of wood seen will decrease as more and more permit holders head out.
A few things to take note of before you head out:
- All- or four-wheel drive is highly recommended, if not necessary.
- Preserve the meadows by not driving out into them. Keep to immediate pullouts along the road.
- Forest Road 5 is located off Highway 64, west of Ange Fire. Check it out on this interactive map: https://www.fs.usda.gov/ivm/index.html?minx=-11732499...
