Members Sought for Talpa Foothills Working Group

The Carson National Forest is looking for interested parties to participate on a working group to advise recreation staff on a potential multi-use trail system (hike, bicycle, equestrian) in the Talpa Foothills area, just east of Taos, NM. Applications to be a part of the working group are currently being accepted through November 20, 2022.

The area has been subject to high recreation demand from the public, prompting challenges in managing the undeveloped area. User-created trails have brought forth numerous issues, including erosion concerns, proper legal access and user conflicts, such as collisions around blind spots.

The goal of the Talpa Foothills Working Group is to create a proposal that reflects a range of voices and perspectives. That recommendation would then be used to develop an official government proposal under the National Environmental Policy Act process, which includes more opportunities for public engagement.

Working Group membership should reflect a diverse set of interested stakeholders, including a nearby resident, environmental group representative, youth representative, Talpa Ridge recreation user, local government official or employee, and proximate pueblo, land grant and acequia representatives.

A full list of member-types sought, as well as an application, meeting dates and other information, can be found at the Talpa Foothills Working Group page on the Forest’s website: https://www.fs.usda.gov/.../workin.../advisorycommittees/...
