Juan Tomas Forest Health Project to begin November 9, 2022
Work will continue through December, weather permitting
Albuquerque - The Juan Tomas Forest Health project is a cooperative project between the New Mexico Forestry Division of the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD), Ciudad Soil and Water Conservation District (CSWCD), and the City of Albuquerque Open Space Division. The project is an 86.8-acre mastication project to improve forest health. See (Map 1) General location for an idea of where the project sits in location to NM 337 and Oak Flat Road. See (Map 2) Project Location for an idea of its location in relation to the trails.
Work will include thinning pinon and juniper stands to promote ponderosa pine regeneration, expand existing meadows, create more defensible space, and reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires. No trails will be affected during this project.
Please do not approach the equipment! This type of machinery can propel material up to 300 feet from the front and back.
