October 24th, 2022 Press Release
On October 23rd, 2022 at about 1:40am Taos County Deputies and EMS were dispatched to a single vehicle roll over near #23 Los Cordovas Road south of Taos. On arrival, they observed a silver Jeep Patriot at rest on its roof on the southeast side of the roadway and eventually identified seven teenage juveniles as the occupants. The driver and two other occupants were later flown from Holy Cross Hospital to UNM Hospital with critical injuries. Three other occupants were also treated at Holy Cross Hospital. One female occupant was partially ejected from the vehicle and trapped, she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Seatbelts did not appear to have been worn by the occupants and excessive speed and alcohol use is suspected. The investigation is on-going as of the time of this press release. 18 year old Haley Martinez of Taos is currently charged with eight (counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor after she was identified as hosting the underage drinking party. TCSO is working closely with the District Attorney’s Office to complete this investigation which may include charges against the driver and others at a later time.
“This is a senseless tragedy that has struck our community and it’s extremely disappointing that in this day and age, anyone would knowingly host an underage drinking party or choose to drink and drive”.
