UNM-Taos HIVE Awarded Major Grants Totaling Over $2.5 Million

It was announced on Oct. 5 that The University of New Mexico-Taos Hub of Internet-Based Vocation and Education (UNM-Taos HIVE) has secured a Venture Challenge grant of $1.4 million via the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Build to Scale program. UNM-Taos HIVE worked with the Center on Rural Innovation (CORI) to apply for this highly competitive grant as part of CORI’s 2022 Rural Innovation Initiative, a technical assistance program empowering rural communities to create inclusive digital economies that support scalable entrepreneurship and tech job creation.

A second large grant is also coming to the HIVE. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management recently issued a grant to the Taos Community Foundation, Inc. With this grant, the HIVE intends to build capacity and focus on aligning its program with DOE and National Lab goals of increasing the skills of local students and increased utilization of the local workforce. UNM-Taos HIVE’s proximity to Los Alamos and Sandia National labs opens an opportunity to transition recent high school graduates and equivalent youth, adult learners, and working adults from UNM-Taos HIVE to jobs at the local National Labs and remotely across the country.

The anticipated grant value is $1,160,959 distributed as $200,000 a year for 5 years. The project period is from October 1, 2022, through September 30, 2027.

UNM-Taos HIVE is a coworking space and small business support center with onsite UNM-Taos classes and industry-recognized certification programs. The HIVE offers an individualized learning journey for those interested in working online or becoming an entrepreneur.
