Smoke is currently visible from a lightning-caused fire in the San Cristobal area. First reported yesterday evening, the fire is located upslope from the community, possibly in the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness. There is no threat to communities or infrastructure.
Crews are currently trying to gain access. The area received rain last night and more is in the forecast.
This is the 18th known lightning-caused fire on the Forest this summer. Two other lightning-caused fires are currently active, although not showing as much smoke.
One is located above Highway 518 near Comales Campground and was fully contained this morning. Another is near the Colorado border, west of the Jicarilla Apache Nation, where crews are attempting access this morning.
