On July 23rd, 2022 shortly before midnight TCSO deputies responded to a reported gunshot at the El Prado speedway gas station. Deputies interviewed witnesses and learned the altercation was actually a stabbing, not a gunshot as previously reported and several people had been present or perhaps involved. Neither the suspect nor victim was at the scene.
The victim, 28 year old Joshua Trujillo of Canon, NM was taken to Holy Cross Hospital where deputies learned he had been stabbed multiple times lost consciousness, and was soon flown out due to the extent of his injuries. Deputies later learned that Mr. Trujillo had been stabbed 13 – 14 times about his body.
As deputies continued their investigation they were able to identify and locate the offender, 31 year old Daniel Chavez of Albuquerque, NM. Although he admitted to being in the altercation he did not admit to stabbing Mr. Trujillo. Deputies arrested him based on witnesses and surveillance video that show him stabbing Mr. Trujillo.
Mr. Chavez was charged with aggravated battery (use of deadly weapon) and tampering with evidence. These charges are under review of the District Attorney’s Office and may be enhanced at a later time.
