City of Raton issued the following announcement on Sept. 22.
The City of Raton has received numerous calls recently regarding the rules to put up election signs for the November 3rd General Election.
Per the City Zoning Ordinance, temporary political signs shall be allowed to be placed within the property lines and are only allowed to be erected or posted 4 weeks (28 days) prior to the election and must be removed within 10 days after the election.
In Addition, signs placed in the City of Raton public right-of-way or the New Mexico Department of Transportation right-of-way are not allowed and will be removed.
If placed on the private property, candidates must obtain permission from the property owner.
It is also important to remind those campaigning, that they may not place handbills on vehicles or leave upon private premises except by handling or transmitting any handbill directly to the owner, occupant or person present on the premises.
The city of Raton appreciates your cooperation.
Violators will be asked to comply. Anyone that has questions regarding the ordinance may contact Raton City Hall for further information.
