New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas recently announced that James Lambros, a convicted fraud who stole more than $1 million from a 98-year-old former Albuquerque resident, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison to be followed by five years of probation.
“Our office will always fight for the most vulnerable, particularly elder New Mexicans who are preyed upon,” Balderas said in a statement. “I am grateful that the victims in this case will receive justice, and my office will continue to hold anyone who seeks to harm vulnerable New Mexicans accountable.”
Lambros was convicted of five felony charges, including larceny, embezzlement, tax fraud, forgery and theft of a credit card.
Elderly citizens are often the target of scams, taken advantage of by con artists who prey on unsuspecting citizens. There are several organizations, including the AARP, that educate the elderly about fraud protection and financial crimes.
